Designing in Small Spaces

Living and designing small spaces does not have to involve compromise! Even though designing small spaces can prove to be a difficult and daunting task, we have gathered some tips and tricks that can help turn your small space into one of comfort and style.

Focus on Your Lighting
Small spaces inadvertently develop a cave-like feel, usually due to the lack of natural light coming into the space. As designers, we can compensate for this with plenty of added light fixtures to every space- from kitchen to bedroom! Combine pendant lighting with wall sconces and table lamps so that light sources come from different angles around each of the rooms.
Keep The Floor Clean
Space for the essentials is important, but your small room design cannot prove functional if there is not room to walk. Using floating pieces such as shelves and nightstands that mount to the wall can help free the floor space without sacrificing storage. Choosing a hanging light piece like a sconce or pendant light over a floor lamp can increase the amount of floor space as well.

Find Dynamic Furniture
Functional and dynamic furniture can make a small space more accommodating for a variety of different activities and occasions. Dining tables are important, but do you need it 24/7? A folding table can help achieve the desired dining setting when needed, but fold away when not in use to provide more floor space and avoid clutter that inevitably collects on the surface. Storage beds can keep items off the floor and out of sight, as well as diminish the need for a dresser. A mounted-wall desk can provide a workspace when needed, but fold away when it is time to relax with family and friends.
Give Your Pieces Space
Nothing is more indicative of lack of space than furniture pieces pressed up against each other. Designing in a small space is designing with purpose and only the most important pieces have a spot in your space. This may mean getting rid of an extra end table or accent chair. Putting walking room between the furniture and the wall can help make a room feel less cramped. Like we mentioned earlier, using floating pieces like shelves or nightstands can help compensate for getting rid of some bulkier furniture pieces.

Mirrors!
Mirrors can be a saving grace if your small space does not have a lot of natural light. If positioned correctly, they can reflect that natural light to brighten the dark corners of any room. Mirrors can also serve the room by giving the illusion of a bigger space. Consider creating a gallery type wall with mirrors or using one large mirror to line a wall.

That’s good to know that you could compensate for the lack of natural light with a bunch of light fixtures. I would think that adding a lamp or something would be an easy way to add some light to a room. I’ll have to consider getting some lamps for my tables and see if that makes the room look brighter.
Totally! And having light fixtures that bring light from different directions could help create a balance of light in the room, making it brighter. Pendant lights can help accent light that comes from table lamps. Thanks for commenting ☺️
