Podcasts to Follow to Stay Educated and Informed About Social Issues of Today

In today’s climate it is more important than ever to be constantly educating ourselves about the social issues and injustices that are and have been happening in our communities for decades. It is important as consumers to seek information to educate ourselves on how to be better advocates for our neighbors and friends in order to live in a society where we can all feel free and comfortable to be who we are. In this day and age of Internet and technology ignorance is a choice, but it can be hard to find a starting point to begin educating yourself so that you can have informed and sometimes tough conversations about these issues in society. We should never cease to learn and educate ourselves about the world around us because this is the catalyst for change. These are only a few of the many podcasts out there that are doing a great job of bringing awareness but this is a great starting point to begin or continue informing yourself about what is actually happening in the world around us.

Pod Save the People

Host and activist DeRay Mckesson explores a variety of topics relating to news, politics and social justice. His guests include experts, influences and leaders who engage him in thought provoking conversation and analysis allowing the reader to feel like they are sitting right there with them. I found this weeks episode, “We’ve Been Here Before” (with Mary Kay Henry) super eye opening as they each talk about overlooked news stories and cover a variety topics from racism in property taxes to homeschooling during the Corona Virus pandemic. I would highly recommend checking out this episode as well as the episode “What Comes Next” (with Joanna Schwartz).

The New Activist

The New Activist is presented by the International Justice Mission and they use this platform to talk with activists and creative thinkers tackling some of the most pressing issues we are facing on society today. Episode 74: “Latasha Morrison Returns to Help us Understand” was a very intriguing and insightful episode in which Latasha Morrison, the founder of Be the Bridge talks about the role of her organization and how they encourage racial reconciliation through providing resources and education. She uses her experience and insight to talk about the Black Lives Matter movement and the challenges and support they face in the current climate of society today.

Inclusive Activism

The host Rowdy, uses this podcast to deep dive into diversity and inclusion and how it relates to communities as a whole. He tackles issues that are not always discussed and brings them to light in order to create awareness for listeners and open their eyes to the struggles and victories that happen every day. I found his episode titled: “Not Racist or Actively Anti-‘ist’ – The need for better stories of change” to be very easy to understand and follow. He frames topics like the idea that we cannot just be not racist we have to be anti-racist and defund the police and refund the community in a digestible way for listeners.

The Activist Hustle

The Activist Hustle is a podcast that is created by and geared towards Millennials and Gen-Z listeners, but people of all ages should listen! Their interviews focus on activists who are breaking the mold and making a difference within our communities. Their most recent episode, Episode 8: “Disparities in the Medical System” was super enlightening to the experiences of POC seeking healthcare and how you can be a better advocate for yourself as a POC in order to get the healthcare you deserve. I would highly recommend listening to this episode especially if you are not a POC because I guarantee it will bring insight to experiences that you may not have encountered yourself.

The 1619 Project

I learned about this New York Times project in my last semester at Sac State in my Communication and American Culture class. This project is absolutely phenomenal and necessary to bringing awareness to how our country was truly founded on the backs of the enslaved that have been oppressed and overlooked since the inception of our country. The series is only 6 episodes long and needs to be consumed as a whole to fully understand the deep rooted and systematic oppression that our country has been founded on.
