Pick your Aesthetic

Determining the style of your gallery wall is the first and most important step to having a unique and cohesive wall. For those who are more eclectic and diverse a little disorder can create some order. A grid pattern can be used for those who like clean lines and symmetry in their design. Incorporating sculptural or textural items into your wall can add diversity in texture and draw your eye in. The color scheme is important to your gallery wall as well. Do not be afraid to mix materials or colors. Different size frames or different color frames break up monotony and add diversity, while same colored frames and sizes add a more classic look to the wall.

Plan it out

Like any great masterpiece, a plan is always needed! Laying your pieces out on the floor prior to hammering into the wall will help keep you from pulling your hair out! This step will also allow you to see which pieces look best next to each other. The layout is important because you want all your pieces to flow together but do not want to have multiple of the same style pieces next to each other. This part can still be tricky, so if you create a design that you like take a picture of it. Create two or three other design variations and take photos of those as well. Once you have taken photos of a few of your favorite arrangements, flip through them and see which one is the best for your space.

Try it out

Before you make the holes in your wall try out the design on the wall first. You can do this by taking some tissue or kraft paper and tracing each of the frames. Cut each of these paper frames out and tape them to the wall in the design that you wish to use. Ask yourself: Does this fit the space properly? How is my design in relation to other furniture in my room? How is the height of my design? This step can really save you from some extra little oopsy holes in your wall!

Hang em up!

Now that you have laid the groundwork for yourself this last step is a breeze! Mark on each of the paper frames where you want the nail hole while they are still hanging in your desired design. Hammer your nail through the paper and into the wall and tear the paper away when you are finished. Hang em up!
