Self Reflection and Social Distancing

Self Reflection and Social Distancing

At the beginning of January I challenged myself to get back into reading for personal pleasure and when all the social distancing protocols got put into place I thought this could not be better timing to unplug and read! I started reading some self help/self reflection books because I believe that we can never stop growing and learning about ourselves emotionally as well as emotional awareness is something that is not focused on in school but extremely important. Here are three books I have read during quarantine that I wanted to share with you all!

A fun and entertaining read, Jen Sincero has a fantastic way of explaining how and why we act certain ways as well as tips and tricks on how we can retrain ourselves to unlock more of our potential. I particularly found Chapter 25: Remember to Surrender to be a fantastic chapter and really helped me shift my perspective on fear and enlightened me on how it can hold me back from my goals if I let it. I really enjoyed this book and it is not very long so it’s a great quick read!

I read this book three years ago and I read it again this year. It is such an interesting thought provoking book. The book spans a 4 days retreat in Tucson, Arizona where The Dalai Lama is teaching a group of 1,600 people. He teaches, answers questions from the audience and leads the group in thoughtful meditation. The book does a great job of making you feel like you are there at the retreat with them. The first session of day 3 was one of my favorite parts of the book, he talks about patience and expressing love and gratitude towards one’s enemy. The audience also asks some very thought provoking questions which he answers very well and very in depth. I highly recommend this book to someone like myself, who is curious on different perspectives of handling anger and not letting it consume you or take away from your overall happiness.

Amy Morin did such a fantastic job with this book! She writes in a way that is easy to read and understand as well as she provides real scenarios from her life and from her client’s experiences (names are changed or omitted of course). Each chapter has such great organization and provides a check list of do’s and don’ts for each of the 13 things as to better help you recognize these traits in yourself and help you learn the correct behavior to overcome them.

These three books helped me look at myself more introspectively and helped provide some tools to better deal with the difficulties that arise in everyday life. I would recommend to anyone, and I am open to suggestions of books to read as well so please send some to me! 🙂
