Dalgona Coffee Quarantini
Yes, we decided to hop on the bandwagon and try our hand at making Dalgona Coffee. With just a few simple ingredients found in your pantry and five minutes of your time, this delicious concoction is easily made. And with very little to do at home, why not try it? We were pleasantly surprised by how good this drink was and decided it would make a great cocktail as well!
For those that don’t know, this drink is based on an Indian beverage known as Phenti Hui coffee (though you’ll find similar drinks from other countries as well) and has become quite popular through South Korean social media. Something to note here, it’s not possible to make Dalgona coffee using regular ground coffee beans. You’ll need the magic of instant coffee to incorporate the air and create that light and foamy topping. Check the label to make sure you’re using instant, not micro-ground, or a combination of both – I’m looking at you Starbucks Via.
We used what we had on hand, Medaglia D’oro instant espresso, but you can use any instant coffee you can find at the grocery store. If you’re feeling fancy, check out some of the specialty instant coffees available online like Voilá. This recipe will make enough whipped topping for 2-4 drinks. We don’t suggest making a smaller batch as it will be harder to whip.
Without further ado, the recipe for our Dalgona Coffee Quarantini:
Dalgona Coffee Cocktail
Ingredients
Dalgona Coffee Whip
- 2 Tbsp Instant coffee
- 2 Tbsp Granulated sugar
- 2 Tbsp Off-boil water
- Small pinch fine sea salt (optional)
- Dash vanilla extract (optional)
- Chocolate shavings (optional)
Liquid Ingredients
- 3/4 oz Bailey's
- 3/4 oz Kahlúa
- 3/4 oz Amaretto
- 2 oz Milk (we prefer non-fat)
Instructions
To make the Dalgona Coffee Whip:
- Combine instant coffee, sugar, and hot water (plus salt and vanilla if using) together with a rubber spatula.
- Whip with a hand mixer until fluffy. Start low, then turn to medium speed. Whisk for about 3 minutes, it will look lighter in color. Make sure everything is incoprorated with the rubber sptaula.
To make the cocktail:
- Place one large cube of ice in a whiskey glass.
- Pour all liquid ingredients together over ice and stir.
- Place Dalgona Coffee Whip on top with a spoon. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings.
- Enjoy!
